Mr Smith, Herts

During the early stages of learning, the aim with most educational development is to create a positive learning pattern and encourage social interaction skills. But once a child moves on into full-time education, the emphasis changes and shifts onto acquiring new skills, new knowledge and developing greater peer relationships with children of their own age.
At Verbal Behaviour Consultants, we understand how important the ‘learning years’ are to every child, and want to help them develop to their maximum potential. This is why our expert behaviour analysts and psychologists work not only with the parents and the individual child, but also with outside organisations such as schools and colleges. By understanding the challenges children on the autistic spectrum or suffering from learning difficulties confront every day, teachers can be better equipped to continue developing that positive approach to learning.
We don’t put a time limit on our programmes. Each child learns at a different speed, and if forced to evolve their skills at a rate that is not comfortable for them, they may miss out on opportunities to develop interests in specific areas. Our understanding of the spectrum of conditions and how each child responds to stimuli in their environment means that we can spot if a child has a particular interest in one area and encourage them to expand in that field. By working closely with teachers and schools, we can also advise education experts how best to give each child the encouragement, guidance and support that they need to reach their full potential. It also enables teachers to spot if a child is struggling in school, and what to do to help them overcome any obstacles they may face.
At VBC, we can work with the family and schools to develop full time home programmes and part time home and school programmes. We can also support full time programmes by giving specialist training to educational institutions, teachers and families so that a cohesive strategy can be put in place to encourage the child to develop. For example, we typically have a consultation every three months for two full days whereby everyone working with the child is taught the goals for the next three months. This creates a structured learning process – something that many children crave. We tailor our programmes and place therapists who are ideally suited to the child. But sometimes rather than using therapists to develop the programme, we just train the families and schools. This gives us the flexibility to adapt and alter the programme to suit the child’s needs. We can offer weekly updates, bi-weekly or monthly updates, depending on the child and family.
For our typically developing children who are struggling academically or even socially, we also have therapists who can tailor education programmes and extra lessons to make it a little easier for them to achieve their maximum potential, both academically and in a social setting.
